Alpha Scanner: scan the QR code and use your phone as a barcode scanner

No barcode gun? Your Android phone can do the job. Alpha shows two QR codes - one to get the app, one to pair the phone with your PC. Here is exactly what to do.

What the Alpha Scanner app does

Alpha Scanner is a free Android app that comes with Alpha. Once it is paired, every barcode you point the phone camera at goes straight onto the bill in Sale Item on your PC - like a barcode scanning machine, without buying one. The phone also shows the name, price and stock of what it read.

Before you start

  • Alpha is open on the PC, on the Sale Item screen.
  • The PC and the phone are on the same Wi-Fi (the shop network). If the PC is not on a network, Alpha says so on the screen.
  • An Android phone with a camera.

Step 1: open the phone scanner panel

In Alpha, open Sale Item and click Phone scanner in the row at the top. The panel Phone scanner (Alpha Scanner app) opens.

Step 2: get the app (first QR code)

If the phone does not have the app yet, the panel shows a QR code under No app yet?. Open the phone's own camera and point it at this QR code, then open the link and install the app.

Step 3: pair the phone (second QR code)

  1. Open the Alpha Scanner app on the phone and tap Pair with PC.
  2. On the PC, the panel shows the pairing code - a QR code that works for 10 minutes. Scan it with the app.
  3. The PC shows Phone connected. Done.

If the 10 minutes pass, click Make a new one on the PC and scan the new code.

Step 4: scan and bill

Point the phone at a product's barcode. It is added to the bill on the PC, and the panel counts how many codes were scanned. A barcode that is not in your stock list shows Not in stock list - add it on the PC.

From now on you pair only once: whenever the PC is on and Sale Item is open, the phone connects by itself.

If it does not connect

Questions

Does it cost extra? No. The Alpha Scanner app is free with Alpha.

Does it work on iPhone? The app is for Android.

Can more than one phone be paired? Alpha remembers the phones that were paired with it and shows them in the panel.

Do I still need a barcode gun? No - but a USB scanner also works with Alpha if you already have one.
